RealTobacco started as an ongoing project of both Nev and Daz writing and recording original material in their own distinctive style. The guys played together in Realto in the early 80’s and then again throughout the 90’s in Tobacco Road. The idea behind RealTobacco was to come up with a CD’s worth of songs to share with friends and family but the songs they are producing are far too good to keep on a personal basis and it looks like there may be a few gigs in the future?
The style of RealTobacco is a real mixed bag, the first song recorded was an old tune of Nev’s called Somethings Gonna Change, to Daz it sounds like something The Doors would have recorded. Rachel a friend from Holland ( A real life Dutch New Romantic) commented on the track and said it could have been a lost Eric Clapton recording.
Smile was written by Daz after playing Out Of The Blue by The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) one afternoon at work. Daz got influenced and as soon as he got home sat down in the studio and wrote the song. It does have a feel of Real Love by The Beatles which Jeff Lynne did produce. Daz’s brother Robert commented on the track saying it should be entered into the Eurovision Song Contest, he is even willing to put up the money to register it for next years competition LOL
When the guys were in Tobacco Road they wrote a song called Midnight with Johnny Green, a great song about travelling home in the middle of the night. The recording of this song was never that good as it was done on an old 4 track recording studio back in 1994. Mastered onto high quality cassette tape, no matter how high the quality you still get hiss? Anyhow RealTobacco have re-done this song but think they need to poach Johnny Green to come and sing the high bits lol.
The latest recording is another old song by Nev called Morning Blues, all about an old rocker who seems to be down on his luck, a comment was made by Dave Carter – Guitarist from Daz’s old 9 piece Funk Band Rhythm Method. He said it was like something Gary Moore would have recorded, and the Spanish feel at the end of the song is pure genious.
A beautiful classical guitar themed song called Polynesian Sunset is included in the pickings. This was a song composed by Nev and Johnny Green from their days as Casino.
